C.S.I. Paris or Big Brother : how video monitoring helped arrest 350 people in Paris?

Last Wednesday, the Paris Prefecture of Police (PPP) declared that nearly 350 individuals had been arrested in Paris thanks to new video monitoring cameras which have been deployed around the capital city since December 21st 2011. The PPP specified that the Paris police performed almost 650 interventions since December 21st based on analysis of the feed coming from 180 cameras equipped with new technology and currently available on 22 different sites around Paris. The PPP also indicated that policemen arrested 67 individuals for charity fraud, 63 for purse snatching and 17 for violent robbery. From now 'til summer 2012, set as completion date of this video protection program for the capital city, almost 1,000 new videocameras are to be installed. They will be part of a pool of almost 13,500 videocameras which include units from the French National Railway System (SNCF in French) and the Paris Transportation Network (RATP in French, with 12,000 videocameras) as well as the city of Paris and several privately owned companies. Their feed images will be available in police stations and collected at the PPP.
